Firmly rooted they stand, forever on hard ground,
They flash their smile around, round and round and round,
They beckon you ceaselessly from across the breakers,
Alas, they are such life-savers and heart-breakers.
We see them everyday, and decide sometimes to maybe never think of them again. We firmly resolve our resolve, only to see it dissolve into them. We run through our lives with the hope that they are just apparitions that pleasantly distract. Yet they show no signs of abating, instead they keep advancing like the camel further into your tent.
They are the beacons that hold you prisoner with their light. They blind you, and yet you choose them because they are a much better alternative than darkness, atleast you can look away from the light, there is however no looking away from the darkness, only looking into it, except maybe back into the light. That is the irony of the choice they offer, a darkness so black, so empty of them, that we would rush back into such blinding light, because the only redeemer in sight is better than a possible lifetime of hopelessness.
This page contains the beacons, the inspirations who led my boat onto new ground beyond the seas of uncertainty into new lands of discovery. So many times through the journey I was stuck heading nowhere because of a general lack of direction, and then from somewhere, yet as if from of nowhere, one of these beacons would shine, and take me forward. Every land seemed new, every shore promised gold and surprisingly none of them disappointed.
May these beacons that shine on everyone’s lives keep shining keeping everyone’s boat moving. to what shore I know not. But there is such a satisfaction in movement, in that breaking of stillness with the promise of progress to look forward to, that I wish there were more beacons than we could follow.
