Why is it, that in a world, with a million sights to see,
And a time, when there are, a hundred places to be,
At a juncture, that has a hundred emotions to feel,
That you suddenly turn away, becoming cold as steel?

When every other person is busy, trying to find someone,
And you know, on this earth, that could mean just anyone,
Why do you tell me, that this person is the only one,
And share not, what were your tests, that he easily won?

You rush me to him, like a hurriedly flowing stream,
When I don’t even know, if I am within your dream,
Although I can feel his warmth, gentle as a sunbeam,
I know not, if you both are really conspiring as a team.

Just when I let it skim across me, you take it away,
Like the invisible vapours of a rivulet gone astray,
Though I know, you will send them back to me, some day,
I fail to understand, why you put me through its pain, today.

You tell me today, that your decision was, maybe, wrong,
And wake me tomorrow, with assurances, we will get along,
You show me how our every moment, is an uncomposed song,
And smile silently, cunningly, when I ask you, for how long?

I’ve heard, that your moments of reason, are far and few,
And people think me insane, for talking or listening to you,
You throw me into danger, and ride heroically to my rescue,
And yet every time we talk, I always learn something new.

This one is for another longtime Beacon, the ever-inspiring Gulzar. It is a conversation between a girl and her heart. It tries to explore a soliloquy that the girl delivers, hoping her heart will respond. Most of it though, is inspired by Gulzar’s “Dil tho bachcha hai ji”, in which he masterfully covers the perils of the heart, and its machinations. To sum it up, the things that get out of our hearts are more dangerous than the ones that get into them. So keep a close watch.
